Berkeley Ballet Theater brings the joy of dance — with all its physical, mental, and aesthetic benefits — to students from pre-ballet to pre-professional. Whatever a student’s goal, we believe it is best achieved in a well-disciplined, positive, and loving environment. Because performance is a valuable part of a dancer’s education, we provide opportunities for all students to dance in stage productions.

Registration and placement
Continuing students are placed in their fall classes according to evaluations given at the end of the previous school year. New students will be placed according to their registration information; the teachers, Principal, and Artistic Director will make any necessary adjustments during the first two weeks of classes. The careful placement of each student is taken very seriously and is very important to the proper development and safety of the student; therefore, appeals regarding placement are not accepted. Students spend an average of one to three years in each level and are considered for promotion throughout the year.
In order to have their places held, students need to fill out both pages of the registration form and return it to BBT by August 30.
Performances
We encourage all students to perform. A permission slip will be sent home and each dancer in Levels 1 through Pre-Professional will be asked to return it with a performance fee. During performance preparation months, students in Levels 1 through Pre-Professional will rehearse during part of regularly scheduled class time. These sessions, along with some mandatory Saturday rehearsals, will adequately prepare students for performances.
If students decide to participate in The Nutcracker and/or our Spring Production, they must commit to attend all Saturday Mandatory Rehearsals and Dress Rehearsals. There can be no exceptions. Please plan your holiday and other travels accordingly. All Saturday and Dress Rehearsals are closed. Due to the large number of people involved in productions there can be no additional observers.
